Chapter Nine
“Do you believe him?” Luke fingered the marks on his wrist as he thought over Levi’s question. “I don’t know. Tucker says he didn’t do it. What’s the alternative, though? I’m supposed to believe that a random vampire snuck into the house, bit me, and implanted some dream in my head?” Damn, he felt like a crazy person just saying that shit out loud.
“Did he act weird about it when you asked him?” Levi leaned back in his chair where they were seated at the kitchen table and linked his fingers behind his head. “Even if you’re a corrupt bastard, you’ve got to know when criminals are lying to you.”
Luke’s eye twitched, but he managed not to wince at the very accurate description of his last couple of years as sheriff. Nor did he flinch away from the accusation in Levi’s tone. While there hadn’t been any open hostility between them since his friend’s arrival, Luke knew the former bar owner hadn’t fully forgiven him for the things he’d said about Archer.
“That boy ain’t gonna press charges. He said so himself. This is a nice, quiet town, Levi. We want to keep it that way.”
“And assault and attempted rape doesn’t look good on the annual crime report. You’re cleaning up this town and making it safe. That’s your campaign gimmick, right?”
“I’ve worked damn hard for this town. I deserve to be mayor, and I’m not going to let some little faggot blow in here and ruin it!”
Luke had seen Archer’s kind before. They drifted into town, stirred up trouble, and then disappeared just as quickly as they’d appeared. The Cooper boys had been a thorn in his side since he’d taken over as sheriff, but they were locals. How would it look for him to take a drifter’s word over one of his own?
Levi had nailed it right on the head when he’d barged into Luke’s office, though. Why should he sully his reputation or that of Beggs on the word of a guy who was obviously just passing through? Only Archer hadn’t left like he was supposed to. He’d stuck around just long enough to wiggle his way into Levi’s bed and nearly ruin everything for Luke.
“There’s only nineteen days left,” Levi reminded him unnecessarily. “From where I’m sitting, neither of you have made much progress.”
“That’s not true.” Luke’s thoughts strayed to Tucker. He’d been very giving with Tucker that morning.
“Fucking your roommate six ways from Sunday doesn’t make you selfless. It just makes you a hypocritical bastard.”
“I apologized for that shit I said about you and Archer.” Was the guy going to make him plead and grovel?
“Yeah, and we’ll talk again when you actually mean it.” Levi unclasped his hands and leaned forward to rest his elbows on the table. “Avarus isn’t forcing me to be here. I came because I want to help. There’s not a damn thing I can do if you don’t want that help, though.”
“Then maybe you should go.” He wasn’t stupid. It
